Dungeons and Dragons: Beholder Encounter by Deimos-Remus Dungeons and Dragons: Beholder Encounter by Deimos-Remus
I've had this completed for almost half a year now, It's just been sitting around on my computer for a while. I have a backup of a few pieces that I've been meaning to submit.

Anyway, as I mentioned with my Bullywug piece from a while ago, I've always loved the old D&D monsters, and the Beholder is no different. I wanted to set up the piece like a gameboard, with tiles and whatnot. I had a couple more of these planned, which I may still complete, but I have loads of projects at the moment.

I've actually never played Neverwinter Nights, but I've heard that the Beholders were a pain!

I love this! I've always had a fondness for the beholder, and I love the old-school look of this one. I find the current D&D versions to have deviated too far - they look like they are trying to hard to be scary.

I like to imagine them floating around the dungeon, eyes half-closed, lost in their own otherworldly thoughts, the only sound accompanying them an eerie boom like distant waves hitting a rocky bluff, and then upon encountering an adventurer, they WAKE UP and attack, much like this one :)

Thanks a bunch! I feel the same way, things are trying too hard nowadays. Simplicity is something I've grown to deeply appreciate, especially in character and creature design.

I could see these on birthday cards.

Fun trivia bit: The Beholder is one of the few fantasy monsters wholly owned by the D&D license. Unlike goblins, orcs, elves, trolls, etc and et cetera, the Beholder's likeness is actually trademarked. I learned this when I tried to put one in a pile of dead monsters on the cover of Fantasy Craft, and had to replace it with a giant centipede.

It's arguably the most iconic of D&D's entire bestiary, that's for sure! Now, what about Bullywugs and the Gelatinous Cube/pudding? Those seem like they'd be owned by D&D as well, but they're a bit more generic than the beholder.

Thanks for the favorite on this by the way!

I'm not sure about the gelatinous cube, though I know we took out the one I slipped into the page frames in Fantasy Craft just to be safe. I don't think anyone owns the visual appearance, because it's too generic... The appearance of the Beholder is unique enough that they could trademark just the visual representation, but I think jelly hexahedrons are less clearly defined.

I had to look up Bullywugs. They're basically frog-people, so you can't own that concept... if nothing else, we can trace anthropomorphic frog people back to Victorian-era children's literature (see Beatrix Potter, or the Wind in the Willows). But they might have some ownership of the name "bullywug", especially in certain conjunctions.

I wouldn't worry about the pieces you've done, unless you're selling them.

That's true.

Just wondering is all, I may want to use these as portfolio pieces for a class, so these may not qualify exactly as fanart if need be.

Thanks for the info man!

I love these "dioramas". They remind me of building plastic models in my childhood.

Great stuff - thanks for sharing.

I think I actually only played it once or twice. My brother and I found a set at a garage sale, and it didn't come with the rule book, so we just made up our own rules. That was fun, haha.

the rule book is thick and theres alot of rolling dice and things so I think the vast majority of kids who are too young for alot of rules just made um up as we go
